Former ref Mike Carey to announce NFL games

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NFL referee Mike Carey has been added to the telecasts of Thursday night and Sunday football games as a rules expert.

Carey was hired Tuesday by CBS. He will provide rules analysis, interpretation and explanations.

Carey worked for 24 years as an NFL official, including 19 as a referee. He was the second African-American referee in NFL history, and the first to work a Super Bowl (2008).

Fox already uses former director of NFL officials Mike Pereira on its telecasts.

Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports, said: “So many times throughout the years of watching Mike officiate, I often thought it would be great to have him someday work for CBS explaining the calls on the field,” said McManus. “We’re excited that this has now come to fruition.”
