WASHINGTON – The replacement refs taking heat for blowing calls and screwing up NFL games appear to have had the flag thrown on them before.
But the source of that criticism can’t make football fans feel very confident about the guys wearing stripes while the labor dispute continues.
Some of the NFL’s replacement refs reportedly had been canned for incompetence in the past — by an underwear league.
The Lingerie Football League put out a statement claiming some (it won’t name names) of the very referees who fans are screaming at on Sundays couldn’t make the grade in a league full of bras and garters.
“Due to several on-field incompetent officiating we chose to part ways with with a couple crews which apparently are now officiating in the NFL,” says Mitchell Mortaza, founder of the Lingerie Football League.
“We have not made public comment to date because we felt it was not our place to do so,” the statement continues. “However in light of (Monday’s) event, we felt it was only fair that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games.”
On Tuesday, the NFL upheld the result of Monday’s game between Seattle and Green Bay.
It released a statement, saying in part: “The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.”
