PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Boston Red Sox will get a look at their future on Wednesday night when rookie outfielder Rusney Castillo makes his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 27-year-old Castillo will play center field and bat seventh. The Red Sox signed Castillo to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract last month, the largest deal ever given to a Cuban-born player.
Castillo rocketed through Boston’s minor league system, playing games at three different levels before being called up on Wednesday. He went 6 for 22 during a stint with Triple-A Pawtucket.
Manager John Farrell says he’s not sure how often he expects Castillo to play over the season’s final dozen games but believes it will give Castillo a good jumping off point for 2015.
