Goetze goal in WCup final ties tournament record

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Mario Goetze’s winning goal for Germany in the World Cup final was the 171st scored in Brazil, equaling the tournament record.

Substitute Goetze scored in the 113th minute to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Argentina at Maracana Stadium on Sunday.

The overall goals mark was set at the 1998 World Cup in France, which was the first played with 32 teams over 64 matches.

That averages at 2.67 goals per game.

Only 145 goals were scored at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa at an average of 2.27 per game.
