SWIFTWATER, Pa. (AP) — Tighter security is in place today at a school district in northeastern Pennsylvania. This, after the suspect in a deadly police ambush was believed to have been spotted near a school.
Pocono Mountain East High School in Swiftwater is open today, along with the other schools in the Pocono Mountain School District. But additional police officers are stationed in Swiftwater, where the campus includes the high school, a junior high and an elementary school. A lone police officer normally patrols the location.
A school district spokeswoman says state police didn’t recommend that schools close. She says school officials anticipated that some students would stay home.
Earlier in the search for Eric Frein (Freen), schools were closed for several days because state police had closed roads, and buses weren’t able to provide transportation.
A woman who was out for a walk on Friday spotted a rifle-toting man with a mud-covered face near the schools in Swiftwater. State police believe the man was Frein. He has eluded capture despite an intense manhunt. He’s accused of opening fire outside a state police barracks last month, killing one trooper and seriously wounding a second.
