US education secretary to volunteer at DC school

WASHINGTON (AP) — Education Secretary Arne Duncan will be participating in volunteer activities meant to enhance environmental sustainability at a District of Columbia school.

The U.S. Green Building Council is sponsoring Saturday’s event, known as the Green Apple Day of Service, at Tubman Elementary School in northwest Washington.

Duncan will join more than 100 volunteers who will be gardening around the school, painting outdoor walls and hosting activities to teach kids and parents about recycling, conservation and nutrition.

This is the third year the U.S. Green Building Council has hosted service days at schools. The goal of the project is to make school buildings and grounds healthier and more sustainable.
