Sweet Briar student apologizes for racial labels

SWEET BRIAR, Va. (AP) — A Sweet Briar College student has apologized for placing racial labels in a dormitory.

The student issued the apology Tuesday in message sent to interim Sweet Briar President James F. Jones. Jones posted the message on the school’s website.

Jones didn’t identify the student, who signed her message “Apologetic.”

Last week, the student placed four labels on doors and water cooler in Meta Glass Hall. Two labels read “White Only” and two read “Colored.”

In her message, the student says she had good intentions but the labels were hurtful. She says she wanted to show that words can still have what she calls “an extreme impact.”

Jones says the college plans to hold a series of open dialogues for faculty, staff and students on moving the college forward.
