Yale announces partnership with Geithner

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will deliver a series of lectures at Yale University in the fall on the global financial crisis, the Ivy League school announced Wednesday.

Geithner will discuss lessons from the 2007-2009 crisis as part of a new course that Geithner will co-teach, the Yale School of Management said.

Geithner also will convene a multi-day seminar on financial crisis management at Yale during the 2014-2015 academic year for officials from finance ministries and central banks around the world.

“This partnership signals a commitment to continue to deepen the understanding of the financial crisis and its aftermath,” said Yale School of Management Dean Edward A. Snyder.

Geithner headed the Treasury throughout President Barack Obama’s first term and stepped down in early 2013. He has been praised for helping prevent a second Great Depression but also criticized for being too friendly to banks and other financial institutions.

“Most governments face financial crises with little knowledge and less experience about how to manage them,” Geithner said. “Through this partnership, we hope to help translate the lessons of our crisis into practical knowledge for the next generation of policymakers in the hope they can reduce the damage of crises to come.”
