Six growing careers to consider

WASHINGTON – Finding a new job has proven difficult in recent years and even employees with solid qualifications and an impressive resume have had trouble.

But there are some positions that employers often need filled, even in this sluggish economy, reports Yahoo! Education. Some employers report having trouble finding qualified applicants.

“If the position requires a specialized subset of skills or experience that only a few select candidates have, these positions become very hard to fill,” Jessica Holbrook Hernandez, president and CEO of Great Resumes Fast tells Yahoo!

Take a look at these six careers and get ready to dust off that resume.

Accountant

The Department of Labor believes the number of accounting jobs will increase 16 percent from 2010 to 2020 — nearly 200,000 jobs. Yahoo! says a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field are usually needed. It’s also advisable to consider getting certified as a public accountant.

Dental hygienist

An associate’s degree is needed for this booming career. Jobs are expected to increase by 38 percent by 2020 — an increase of nearly 70,000 positions, according to the Department of Labor.

Market research analyst

Yahoo! reports this career requires someone “on the pulse” of current trends. Jobs in this field are projected to rise by 116,600.

Usually, a bachelor’s degree in market research is needed. But computer science, math, statistics or even relevant experience can get your foot in the door. It wouldn’t hurt, reports Yahoo!, to have a master’s degree.

Network and computer systems administrators

As companies grow with the technology, merge together or are born anew, they need qualified employees to carry them through. A job growth of more than 96,000 positions is projected between 2010 and 2020.

“Technology is constantly advancing and changing,” Hernandez tells Yahoo!

Personal financial adviser

Money is the name of the game and if you know your numbers, or think you can learn them, you’re in luck. Yahoo! reports that this job has a high turnover rate, so companies really want the right employees.

Degrees in finance, accounting, math, business or law are most helpful.

Medical and health services managers

People in this field are all about working with customers while being able to direct services at a medical practice.

“Services previously offered in hospitals are now shifting to doctor offices. And as the health care industry becomes more complex, physicians will rely on managers to assist them in directing the practice so they can focus on their patients,” Hernandez tells Yahoo!

As baby boomers age and need more services, jobs in this field will be even more in demand.
