WASHINGTON - Virginia is the only state in the nation with widespread flu activity.

"We've been able to identify increased reports of influenza-like illness across the state," says Michelle Peregoy, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Health.

Virginia's widespread flu status came the week ending Jan. 10. Last year, Virginia reported widespread flu activity a week later.

Peregoy says flu season, which starts as early as October, peaks in January and February.

"It can last into March or April sometimes. That being said, it's not too late for people to get their flu shots," she says.

Nationwide, flu activity remained relatively low.
