House backs resolution supporting Israel

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has backed a resolution expressing support for Israel and its right to self-defense.

Lawmakers endorsed the non-binding measure by a voice vote on Friday. It condemns Hamas for unprovoked rocket attacks on Israel. The bipartisan resolution is sponsored by Democratic congressman Steve Israel of New York and Republican congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma.

Israel has intensified its broad military offensive in the Gaza Strip to stop rocket fire from Palestinian militants targeting Israel. The death toll from the 4-day-old conflict has exceeded 100, and President Barack Obama has told Israel the United States is willing to negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

The measure includes a provision by Republican congressman Ed Royce of California highlighting Iran’s role in supporting Hamas.
