VRE sets new one-day ridership record

October 17, 2009 - 11:56am

WASHINGTON - A new milestone for Virginia Railway Express: a one-day ridership record.

"On Wednesday our ridership exceeded 18,000," says Dale Zehner, VRE's CEO. "Never been there, haven't even been close."

There was no special event that day to account for the high number. So why did it happen?

One theory is more workers are leaving their cars at home, and taking advantage of a $230-per month transit benefit.

"The congestion around here has not got any better. Especially on 95 now. 66 is not doing well," says Zehner.

He thinks more commuters are choosing not to drive.

"I think people are starting to look at different options here, and VRE is one of those options."
