I-95 Makes List of Worst Traffic Tie-ups

November 21, 2007 - 5:05am
Adam Tuss, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON -- Just in time for your Thanksgiving drive home, a list of the absolute worst holiday traffic tie-ups in the country is out, and not surprisingly, there are several in the Washington region.

Topping the list is Interstate 95.

Metro Networks, the nation's largest traffic gathering organization, says the stretch of I-95 from D.C. through Philadelphia and into New York is easily the slowest 225 miles of highway during the holidays.

Even more troubling, it gets worse the farther North you go. The section from the Delaware Memorial Bridge just outside of Wilmington, Del., to the George Washington Bridge in New York City rated as the worst.

No. 4 on the top 10 list is I-95 South from Springfield, Va., down to Fredericksburg, Va. The 30-mile stretch regularly experiences extensive delays and can back up 15 to 20 miles on holiday travel days.

Just missing out on the top 10, but receiving an honorable mention, is the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway between Merrifield, Va., and Landover, Md. The backups on that stretch can run 30 miles, nearly half the length of the entire Capital Beltway.
