KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Violence has led up to today’s swearing in of Afghanistan’s new president.
Police say in eastern Paktia province, four police officers and two civilians were killed when a car bomb that exploded near a government compound led to an attack and a gun battle that also killed seven Taliban militants.
And police say two roadside bombs went off on the road connecting the country’s main airport in Kabul with the presidential palace.
One bomb did not result in any deaths or injuries. But police say the second bomb killed six or seven people.
Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai (ahsh-RAHF’ gah-NEE’ ah-mahd-ZEYE’) was sworn in today as Afghanistan’s new president, replacing Hamid Karzai in the country’s first democratic transfer of power since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban.
