WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Naval Academy dean says he’s hoping to have cybersecurity accredited as a major by 2016. No U.S. school currently has a cybersecurity degree accredited by a leading organization, and the academy hopes to be among the first.
Academic dean and provost Andrew Phillips announced the plan Monday to the academy’s Board of Visitors. Board members have encouraged the academy to broaden training, citing cybersecurity’s increasing national security importance. The board includes members of Congress.
Phillips hopes the accreditation could be received by 2016, the year the academy’s first cybersecurity majors would graduate.
The academy is organizing a grassroots effort with other colleges and universities interested in creating accreditation criteria in consultation with ABET. Abet is a leading nonprofit accrediting agency for the disciplines of applied science, computing and engineering.
