Free, online search lets you look up recalled cars

WASHINGTON — With auto companies recalling so many cars, the government has stepped in to keep track of them with a new search tool.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration unveiled a tool that lets you look up your Vehicle Identification Number.

You can look up the number for your car, truck or motorcycle at www.safercar.gov/vinlookup.

NHTSA’s new VIN look-up tool relies on information from all major automakers.

There also a new requirement for automakers to the same data on their own websites.
