NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The police chief in New Orleans is retiring, four years after he took over the scandal-plagued agency.
Ronal Serpas announced his retirement Monday. He is joining the faculty at Loyola University’s Department of Criminal Justice.
His legacy will be mixed. The homicide rate is the lowest it has been in decades. But continued spates of violence have upset many people.
Those included one in the tourist-friendly French Quarter that killed one woman and injured nine, and one in the Lower 9th Ward that killed two people and wounded five, including a mother and her two sons, ages 2 and 4.
Serpas was appointed in 2010, one day after the mayor asked the U.S. Justice Department to send a team to help reform the troubled department.
