Democratic leader compares Walker policies to slap

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee has compared Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s record on women’s issues to a slap, in language that evokes images of domestic violence.

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said the Republican governor has “given women the back of his hand.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported (http://bit.ly/1lIyfu6 ) the Florida congresswoman made the remarks Wednesday in Milwaukee, citing minimum wage and employment discrimination issues.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke’s campaign quickly distanced her from Wasserman Schultz, saying Burke would not have used such terms.

Republican Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch says she was “shocked” by the wording Wasserman Schultz used.

DNC spokeswoman Lily Adams said later that domestic violence is a serious issue and Wasserman Schultz “was by no means belittling the very real pain survivors experience.”
