Bed bugs found at Portsmouth 911 center

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Portsmouth plans to temporarily relocate its 911 center following the discovery of bed bugs in the building.

Media outlets report that a pest control company confirmed the insects’ presence on the center’s second floor last week.

General Services Department director Dennis Bagley says 911 operations will move to a fire station Wednesday morning. The relocation will allow a pest control company to use chemicals to eradicate the insects.

Bagley told city officials in an email that bed bugs cling to clothes and belongings and are carried from one place to another by humans. He says 911 employees will be given sealed plastic containers to store their personal items while at work. They also will receive information on how to deal with bed bugs at home.
