Experts: New iPhone accessories may not be worth it

WASHINGTON – The new iPhone 5 will require an updated fleet of accessories after Apple chose to replace the device’s original 30-point port with the smaller “Lightning.”

Experts warn some of these knock-off brands may not be worth the savings.

Already, two companies are selling their own versions of the new Lightning-to-30 adapters online, reports CNET.com.

Nanotch offers the 7-inch cable adapter for about $18 instead of Apple’s price of nearly $40.

iTronz is selling the smaller adapter for about $10 versus Apple’s almost $30.

They received decent positive ratings on Amazon. Nanotch scored a 94 percent. iTronz 96 percent.

However, some experts say consumers need to be cautious of the new adapters. CNET advises waiting until the new device arrives to ensure its compatibility with other hardware. Also, make sure to order from vendors that offer a money-back guarantee.
