New Complaints of Voter Intimidation in Virginia

November 6, 2006 - 5:53pm
Hank Silverberg, WTOP Radio

RICHMOND, Va. - A new allegation of voter suppression in Virginia.

The State Board of Elections Secretary Jean Jenson has asked the Virginia attorney general and the Justice Department to look into claims of phone calls by people claiming to be elections officials.

Jenson did not detail what was said in the phone calls, but the Jim Webb campaign says one of them actually threatened a Clarendon resident with arrest if he voted, claiming he was a registered voter in New York. The resident says he has lived in Virginia for eight years.

Jenson says voters should be wary of any calls coming from people who claim to be with the state board of elections.

* If you have any questions about voting status, poling place or proper voting procedures, call the board of elections at (800) 552-9745 or visit their Web site.
