Homecoming, Other Activities Postponed at Gallaudet

October 17, 2006 - 5:33pm
WASHINGTON - Students at Gallaudet University will have to wait a while before putting on those dresses and suits -- homecoming and related activities have been postponed this week.

Gallaudet President I. King Jordan says homecoming must be canceled because the university is not operating under normal circumstances because of the protests. He says protesters refuse to open all of the university gates.

Homecoming festivities had been scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday.

Students, faculty and alumni are continuing to protest and demand the resignation of incoming university president Jane Fernandes. Faculty members voted overwhelmingly Monday in support of the protest and passed a resolution for Fernandes to step down or be removed.

Fernandes says she still intends to take the president's post in January. She continues to have the board's support.
