No Metro Fare Hikes Expected in 2007

May 3, 2006 - 7:51am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro's chief says riders shouldn't expect any rate increases before 2008, despite rising gas and electricity costs.

Interim General Manager Dan Tangherlini says more commuters are using Metro because of the higher gas prices. The increase in transit ridership and revenue is offsetting its energy costs.

Tangherlini says the transit agency would be in trouble if ridership remained the same as energy costs rise.

Metro recorded three of its top 10 busiest days ever last month. Two of those days weren't tied to any special events on the National Mall.

But Tangherlini warns the transit agency needs an infusion of dedicated funding to improve its equipment because heavy ridership is straining the system.
