WASHINGTON -- There's a good chance someone you know has the flu right now.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are widespread cases in Maryland and Virginia, and local cases in the District.
The immediate impact of the flu may be noticeable in your office with empty cubicles or even in your child's school district.
In Prince William County, spokesman Phil Kravits says a flu outbreak has left the county with a shortage of school bus drivers.
"We're seeing significantly higher absenteeism in what are already tight ranks of drivers needed to get our kids to and from school safely," Kravits says.
So far, the county has been able to cover all school bus routes. Kravits says concerned parents or students can contact county transportation offices for updates if delays exceed 15 minutes.
The best way to avoid the flu is to wash your hands often and avoid contact with infected people.
The CDC has advised doctors not to prescribe two antiviral drugs used to fight the illness because this year's strains are apparently resistant.
