D.C. and Landowners Negotiate Fate of Properties Near New Stadium

March 13, 2006 - 6:49am
WASHINGTON - The final design of the new Nationals stadium is expected to be unveiled Tuesday.

But as D.C. Mayor Tony Williams gets ready to do that, mediation continues Monday between the city and two landowners who were exempted from a judge's order to vacate their properties two weeks from now.

"We believe the displacement is being formed in a very compassionate and a very orderly way that's going to take care of people," says Mark Tuohey, chairman of D.C.'s Sports and Entertainment Commission.

"There is an enormous amount of new housing that's going to be going up around the stadium, which is going to benefit the community in untold ways," he says.

Council member Jim Graham says he'll seek a one-time waiver to allow certain clubs that cater to the gay community to relocate to an area zoned for industrial or warehouse use.
