Local counties make list of top 25 richest in U.S.

March 8, 2010 - 4:15pm
WASHINGTON - Move over, Beverly Hills.

Loudoun County is the richest in the country, according to Forbes Magazine.

With a median household income of $110,643, Loudoun County sits atop of the magazine's list of the top 25 richest counties.

Here are other local jurisdictions in the top 25:

    2. Fairfax County
    3. Howard County
    6. Fairfax City
    9. Arlington County
    10. Montgomery County
    12. Stafford County
    13. Calvert County
    14. Prince William County
    16. Goochland County, Va.
    21. Charles County
    23. Alexandria City

Why are there so many local areas on the list? George Mason University economist Steve Fuller points to a low unemployment rate as one of the reasons.

"We're getting richer and probably this reflects the fact we were less damaged during the recession. Our unemployment is only 6.2 percent, which is high for us, but it's way down compared to the nation."

Fuller says most of the local counties are also fueled by duel incomes.
