Kaine authorizes more National Guard help

December 20, 2009 - 4:37pm

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is calling up more National Guard members.

The Virginia National Guard says Gov. Tim Kaine authorized calling up 600 more members Sunday to help with recovery from a storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow across parts of the state. The extra help brings the number of soldiers authorized for duty to 1,000 and the Guard says it expects more than 750 on duty by Sunday afternoon.

Maj. Gen. Robert Newman says members are rescuing motorists, moving supplies, helping run shelters and transporting patients, doctors and other health care professionals.
