Rain saturates roads: Lots of accidents

October 28, 2009 - 10:01am
WASHINGTON - Dozens of accidents have been reported across the metro area as the region gets saturated by yet another day of rain.

The rains created ponding and deep water on some roads.

One water rescue occurred Wednesday morning in Montgomery County on Brighton Dam Road. Two vehicles ended up stuck in high water, and the people inside them had to be rescued, according to WTOP Traffic.

Deep water closed Md. 214 in Edgewater between Route 2 and Brick Church Road.

WTOP Traffic Reporter Lisa Baden describes the morning commute as "challenging."

Leaves have created slippery conditions on roads and have clogged drains, leaving the water nowhere to go.

A power outage in Old Town Alexandria contributed to a backup on the Capital Beltway. Baden says traffic was backed up across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge into Maryland during the outage. The power has been restored.

In Springfield, a Fairfax Connector bus struck a car on Old Keene Mill Road. Old Keene Mill had to be closed between Rolling Road and Carrleigh Parkway.

Police say the bus, which had a green light, was traveling westbound on Old Keene Mill Road at Carrleigh Parkway when the car got in front of it.

The driver, who is in his 80s, suffered serious injuries, according to Fairfax County Police. No passengers on the bus were hurt.
