Graham does not want pizza ban

May 27, 2009 - 9:48am

WASHINGTON - D.C. Council member Jim Graham is setting the record straight. He does not want to ban sales of those huge, single slices of pizza in Adams Morgan.

"I have no ban in mind of pizza. I have no legislation being drafted. I have not spoken to a single council member about this issue," Graham tells WTOP.

Graham says he returned to the city after Memorial Day to what he calls preposterous reports that he was drafting legislation to ban the sale of slices to help reduce crime.

"In a slow news weekend, that's all it took."

Graham does say he wants the places along 18th Street that sell the single slices to lower their music and to make sure there aren't fights inside or on the sidewalk.

"We have had violent crimes occur on the premises, but it is not the consequence of serving pizza," he says.

Graham says he has talked with Mayor Adrian Fenty about the problem of rowdiness, but the suggestion he'd consider trying to ban slices of pizza is "preposterous."

"It's upsetting. People think I'm crazy."
