FREDERICK, Md. - An incident involving a child who went outside her elementary school for recess and found illegal drugs is now under investigation.

It happened on the playground of Centerville Elementary School in Frederick.

"A student found a small clear plastic vial to the rear of the playground," says Cpl. Jennifer Bailey with the Frederick County Sheriff's Department. "It appeared to be an unknown white powdery substance."

Tests confirm it was a small amount of methamphetamine.

The girl who found the vial last week is about 10 years old, and she did not ingest any of its contents.

Principal Steve Raff says nothing like this has been found at the school before. Raff and sheriffs investigators think the drugs were left behind by someone other than a student.

"Probably someone visited the playground after school hours," Raff says.

In the wake of the incident, the sheriff's department is stepping up patrols in the area.

Raff sent home a letter informing parents and warned students if they see something strange on the playground -- "Leave it on the ground, and go back and get an adult and bring them to that object."
