The Frederick County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into possible embezzlement of funds from the Frederick Youth Sports Association, the office confirmed Friday.

The office's criminal investigations unit opened the investigation earlier this month, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. She could not release further details because the investigation is ongoing.

Frederick resident Kathy Carey resigned as FYSA's treasurer in December, and the organization began a financial audit. Carey's husband, Shawn Carey, resigned as head coach of the Tuscarora High School football team shortly thereafter, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Darla McClure, the group's attorney, could not be reached for comment Friday. According to Maryland court records, the organization has not filed charges.
