Parking rates to double in parts of District

January 7, 2009 - 10:56am

WASHINGTON - Get your quarters ready. D.C. is about to double parking meter rates in parts of the city.

If you park at a downtown meter, the rate will go from $1 an hour up to $2 an hour.

In most other parts of town, the rates will increase another quarter an hour.

The city expects the change will generate from $2 million to $7 million in additional revenue each year.

The money will be used in part to fund the O Street Market and several affordable housing programs.

Phil Mendelson was the only council member to vote against the rate increase, which could go into effect as early as next month.

The D.C. Republican Party issued a statement saying the new rates will hurt businesses that depend on customers who drive to their stores.
