ARLINGTON, Va. -- Firefighters rescued 16 people from windows of a burning apartment building Tuesday morning.

The blaze in the 1500 block of Fairfax Drive shut down westbound U.S. 50/Arlington Boulevard, rerouting traffic into Rosslyn during the early part of the morning commute.

Arlington Boulevard reopened just before 7:30 a.m.

Arlington County Fire tells WTOP five people were injured. The injuries range from minor to critical.

Firefighters received the call about the two-alarm fire in the garden-style apartment around 4:45 a.m. The fire may have started in a storage area.
