'Magic Mint' will be harder to find in D.C. area

July 1, 2008 - 2:54pm
Neal Augenstein, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - It will be more difficult for young people in the area to get high off of a popular psychedelic drug called Salvia.

As of July 1, Salvia, a naturally-grown herb, is now illegal in Virginia.

Gov. Tim Kaine signed a bill classifying it as a controlled substance. At least one company that supplies Salvia online is closing because it is based in Virginia.

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler says he will be drafting legislation to restrict the sale of Salvia to minors.

Many people have never heard of the leaf, which is grown in Mexico and is used for religious and healing rituals.
