WASHINGTON - New details have emerged about an attack that police are investigating as a hate crime -- and D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is vowing that justice will be served.
D.C. police initially told WTOP a group of young men approached an intern who worked for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after he came out of a nightclub at 10th and 'O' streets in Northwest early Saturday morning. Now police say the young man interned for the Human Rights Campaign.
Police say the attacker used a derogatory term for homosexual, and beat up the intern, sending him to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police sources say the victim did nothing to provoke the attack.
"The homophobic remarks that were made will automatically trigger a hate crime investigation," says Fenty.
