Alexandria School Board Won't Renew Perry's Contract

June 27, 2007 - 10:30am
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Members of the Alexandria School Board voted early Wednesday morning to affirm their decision to not renew the contract of school superintendent, Rebecca Perry.

The panel voted 5-4 against reversing a decision made last month.

Perry's supporters say that she has improved test scores among the 10,000 students enrolled in the system. Perry has held the job for seven years. Her current contract expires next June.

Some board members called for her to be fired after she was arrested in 2004 for driving under the influence.

Some parents say the school board failed to give Perry a fair assessment.
