Wild day on Wall Street…Price of oil falls again… Las Vegas Sands profit increases

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are ending a wild day mostly lower but indexes recovered much of an early plunge. The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted as much as 460 points in afternoon trading, then regained much of the ground it lost. It ended down 173 points, or 1.1 percent, at 16,141. The S&P 500 fell 15 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,862. The Nasdaq fell 12 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,215.

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil is continuing is downward spiral. It fell to new lows today. Benchmark U.S. crude fell 6 cents to close at $81.78 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, a benchmark for international oils used by many U.S. refineries, fell 99 cents to close at $83.78 on the ICE Futures exchange in London. Brent is at its lowest level since November of 2010.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas Sands Corp. says despite a challenging three months in Macau the company’s profit increased 7.2 percent due to a focus in part on non-gambling revenue. The casino-hotel company says in its third-quarter financial report that revenue dropped 1 percent compared to a year ago to $3.53 billion

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Netflix says its subscriber growth in the latest quarter lagged management’s forecast. The Internet video service’s recent price increases has turned off potential new viewers. The disappointing performance announced today spooked investors already on edge after HBO announced plans to compete against Netflix by offering an Internet-only package next year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says China’s currency remains “significantly undervalued.” But it doesn’t cite China or any other country for unfairly manipulating its currency to gain trade advantages. In a new report by the Treasury Department, the administration does warn China and other countries running trade surpluses that they need to do more to boost domestic growth.
