Stocks waver…GM ignition switch deaths rise to 27… Apple iPhone 6 to be sold in more markets

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have been moving between tiny gains and losses during afternoon trading. Traders are still worried about shaky growth prospects in Europe. They’re looking ahead to a string of corporate earnings results later in the week.

DETROIT (AP) — The man in charge of evaluating the claims against GM for its faulty ignition switches now says at least 27 people have died and 25 were seriously injured in crashes involving those cars. Attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who was hired by GM to compensate victims, says the 27 fatalities were from among the 178 death claims he’s received since August. GM knew about faulty ignition switches in Chevy Cobalts and other small cars for more than a decade but didn’t recall them until February of this year.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford is hiring 850 workers in Michigan to help build its new F-150 pickup truck. The company says 500 of the workers will go to the Dearborn Truck plant, where the F-150 is assembled. Three hundred workers will go to the Dearborn Stamping plant and 50 workers will go to Dearborn Diversified, which makes axles and other parts. With the added hiring, Ford will have nearly 5,000 hourly workers at the complex near its Dearborn headquarters.

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Apple Inc. will sell the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in 36 more markets around the world, including China, India and South Africa, by the end of October. Besides larger screens than previous versions, the new phones offer faster performance and a wireless chip for making credit card payments. Apple says the phones are on track to be available in more than 115 countries by the end of the year, making this the fastest iPhone rollout ever.

HOUSTON (AP) — What could be bad for business can sometimes be good for the customer. The man known in Houston as “Mattress Mack” last spring offered to reimburse the first 500 customers who spent more than $6,300 on furniture at his stores if the Astros won 63 games — matching the age McIngvale turned this year. The Astros won 70 games. Sunday was payoff day and some 420 customers picked up their money at a party at McIngvale’s store. McIngvale says, “The customers are happy, we’re happy.”
