WASHINGTON (AP) — One economist says it’s “just a matter of time” before there’s a “run of big gains” in monthly hiring figures.
Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics is reacting to today’s report that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week fell by 8,000 — and that the total number of people on unemployment is at its lowest level in more than eight years.
The government’s September jobs report is due out tomorrow. Economists say it will show a rebound from the numbers in August — when employers added 142,000 jobs, down from an average of 212,000 in the preceding 12 months.
The consensus forecast is that employers added 215,000 jobs last month.
