Harris Teeter to lower prices for area stores

WASHINGTON — Harris Teeter customers in Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland will soon see the prices on popular products drop, thanks to an expansion of the grocery store’s lower price campaign.

The North Carolina-based grocery store will lower the prices on thousands of products, including organic, grocery and perishable items.

The price drop comes on the heels of the grocery store’s recent merger with The Kroger Co., a Cincinnati-based supermarket chain, in January. Kroger bought Harris Teeter for $2.5 billion, and said at the time of the merger that it expected to see cost savings of $40 million to $50 million in the next four years by increasing the operation’s efficiency and scale.

The supermarket chain also said that Harris Teeter’s prices were higher than what customers perceived and that pricing would need to be addressed.

“This new program is the big change our shoppers have been asking for. Through our recent merger, we have achieved better efficiencies and have chosen to re-invest those savings into, among other things, lower prices for our customers,” said Catherine Becker, communication manager for Harris Teeter, in a press release.

The grocery store’s lower price initiative has already been implemented in a number of stores in North Carolina. Harris Teeter currently operates around 230 stores in eight states and the District, while Kroger operates more than 2,600 grocery stores across the country.

Stores in Delaware and Charlottesville, Virginia, will also see price reductions.
