WASHINGTON — Dog lovers listen up: the Food and Drug Administration is once again warning about products imported from China. This time the FDA is cautioning consumers about chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or treats.
In September 2007 and December 2008, reports surfaced of dogs getting sick after eating products from China. The number of complaints dropped off in the second half of 2009 and through most of 2010.
The FDA is seeing a rise in the number of complaints from dogs owners and veterinarians once again. Some dogs have died, but most dogs do recover.
The FDA says if you do feed your dog these chicken jerky treats, keep a watchful eye on them to make sure you don’t see a decrease in appetite or activity. Also look out for vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, an increase in urination or thirst. These symptoms can take hours or even days to develop. If they do, immediately stop feeding the chicken jerky product and call your veterinarian right away.
