WASHINGTON – If you live in the nation’s capital or Arlington, chances are your credit card has been getting more of a workout than those in other cities across the country.
Bundle, a website that provides information on how people spend, save and invest their money, crunched the numbers and found D.C. is the #1 shopaholic city. Residents spend on average $263 a month.
And, neighboring Arlington isn’t too far behind. Shoppers there spend an average of $254.58 a month. The city ranks as the #2 shopaholic city in the country.
The national average for monthly clothes spending is $142.08.
Bundle looked at the top 100 cities in the U.S. by population and compared household spending on clothes, shoes and other items.
The website analyzed data from the U.S. Government and anonymized credit card transactions from March 2010 to March 2011 to find average monthly spending per city.
Stopping Overshopping, a program to help those with compulsive buying disorder, says more than 18 million Americans are shopaholics.
Bundle notes that Travel Guide Fodor’s has reported of D.C. “the number of designer boutiques is on the rise, and interesting specialty shops and new shopping areas are springing up all over town.”
Here are the top 10 shopaholic cities in America based on average monthly spending:
- Washington D.C. – $263
- Arlington, Va. – $254.58
- Nashville, Tenn. – $251.17
- Scottsdale, Ariz. – $243.17
- Dallas, Texas – $228.58
- San Francisco, Calif. – $227.42
- San Jose, Calif. – $221.17
- Seattle, Wash. – $221.17
- Austin, Texas – $213
- Bakersfield, Calif. – $201.50
