New whiskey, vodka, gin coming to (and from) D.C.

One Eight Distilling plans a summer opening in a Northeast D.C. warehouse and has brand new bottle designs to show off now.

One Eight — named for Article One, Section Eight of the U.S. Constitution, which established the nation’s capital — will also include a tasting room at its Ivy City location and plans to distribute directly to D.C. liquor stores and bars.

Its first round of spirits include Rock Creek White Whiskey, made with locally sourced rye grain, Ivy City Gin and District Made Vodka.

One Eight Distilling’s owners are Alexander Wood and Alex Laufer. Wood, who goes by the name “Sandy” and serves as One Eight’s CEO, is a Washington attorney whose resume includes Akin Gump and Jones Day. Laufer, a biologist who moved to Washington in 2005 to work at the J. Craig Venter Institute, serves as One Eight’s chief operating officer and head distiller.

One Eight located at 1135 Okie Street, N.E.

One Eight joins New Columbia Distillers, maker of Green Hat Gin, about five blocks away on Fenwick Street NE, and the only other distiller located in the District, and comes as  Greater Washington is also enjoying a craft brewing renaissance.
