The Washington Capitals have struggled to find the back of the net at times this season, but they have had no trouble driving thousands of dollars into the District’s coffers.
D.C. Lottery officials said the hockey-themed instant Scratcher game, produced in partnership with the Caps, will generate more than $133,000 for the city’s general fund. The Capitals Scratcher debuted in September with record sales and is on schedule to sell out in early March, sooner than anticipated.
The Scratcher has been the most successful sports-themed ticket for the D.C. Lottery and one of the most successful hockey-themed tickets created by the 12 other lotteries that have joined with NHL teams for instant games.
The game, the first-ever collaboration between the D.C. Lottery and the Capitals, also includes a series of a second-chance prizes such as trips to away games, season tickets, a ride on the Olympia ice-resurfacing machine, suite tickets and merchandise from both the Capitals and D.C. Lottery. The grand prize for the ticket is $50,000.
On the ice, the Capitals have struggled this season with inconsistent play, injuries to key players and a coaching change. The team’s current record (26-20-4) puts the Caps ninth in the Eastern Conference standings. Luckily for the Caps, the season, like their Scratcher game, isn’t over yet.
