WASHINGTON — Among the missing people who disappeared on Malaysian flight 370 was Phillip Wood, a 50-year-old man from Texas who had just met the woman he planned to spend the rest of his life with.
“You’ve got this new future with this new person you didn’t ever think you would meet,” says Sarah Bajc, Wood’s girlfriend. “And now he’s just disappeared. He vanished.”
Bajc, 48, is an American teacher in China. She spoke with CBS’s Dan Raviv recently about the confusion and heartache she’s felt since Wood’s flight went missing.
“We don’t even know where to direct our anger, right?” she told Raviv.
“We don’t know if we’re supposed to just recognize that these things happen, like a freak car crash and it’s just one of those statistical checkboxes of life. Or, if indeed we’ve been the victims of a crime — and we don’t even know who did it.”
Bajc says she and Wood had plans to live together in Kuala Lumpur, where the plane departed for Beijing on March 8.
“It’s not like a normal plane crash,” she said. “It’s not like a normal unsolved crime where the evidence is still being gathered. It’s truly a mystery.”
She says political spin and mismanagement have exacerbated her confusion and pain.
“The unknown goes beyond the unknown.”
