Video highlights harassment of catcalling

WASHINGTON — From “Hey, baby” to winks to “Bless you, mama,” a New York actress received more than 100 unsolicited advances during a 10-hour walk around the Big Apple.

Shoshana B. Roberts volunteered to walk around Manhattan carrying a microphone in each of her hands while Robert Bliss secretly videotaped all of catcalling she encountered. She made the walk silently.

An organization called Hollaback that’s dedicated to eliminating street harassment partnered with Bliss to show the uncomfortable realities of catcalling and street harassment.

At one point, a man walks close by her side for 5 minutes.

Hollaback calls the degree to which Roberts is harassed “shocking.”

Hollaback created a public service announcement from the footage.

Watch the 2-minute video:

Hollaback says Roberts’ experience is not unique.

“Street harassment disproportionately impacts women, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and young people. Although the degree to which Shoshana gets harassed is shocking
