Slate writer suggests those without kids should pay higher tax rate

WASHINGTON — Reihan Salam, a childless writer for Slate, has a bold suggestion. Non-parents who make more than the median income — about $50,000 a year — should pay a higher tax rate.

Salam says everyone in society benefits from the work of parents and that their willingness to have and raise children keeps the economy competitive. He also notes a government study that found — on average — it costs more than $300,000 to raise a child for 18 years.

What do you think about the idea? Should the childless pay more in taxes so parents can pay less? Or do parents get enough, or too much, in tax breaks already?
