Repairs start Monday on faulty GM ignition switches

WASHINGTON — Repairs on faulty ignition switches on Chevy Cobalts and other recalled cars start Monday, and more it’s estimated that more than 2.3 million car owners will have the repairs done over the next six months.

Getting the repair done will take about 30 to 45 minutes, but because of scheduling issues, GM has warned customers that they might have to leave their cars at the dealership.

The repair itself won’t cost owners anything.

GM says the cars in the recall are safe to drive. But the automaker says that putting too much weight on the key can result in cutting power to the power steering, anti-lock brakes and air bags.

Don’t use heavy keyrings and only use the key attached to its fob before and after the repair is done.

While some brands, such as Pontiac and Saturn, have been discontinued, drivers can take their cars to any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac dealer.

GM has admitted to knowing the switches were defective for at least a decade, but didn’t start recalling the vehicles until February.

To understand more on the recall, GM has a web page about it.

The following vehicles have been recalled:

  • All 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalts
  • Pontiac G5
  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada)
  • 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles
  • 2008 – 2010 Pontiac Solstice and G5
  • 2008-2010 Saturn Sky
