Investigation complete in death of Stafford County pedestrian

WASHINGTON – A male pedestrian was struck and killed by a Stafford County fire truck Friday, Dec. 27, as the truck was responding to an auto accident on I-95.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into the incident, which occurred in the 500 block of Warrenton Road in Stafford, Va., is complete.

John Whitehurst, 69, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., was not using the crosswalk in a darkened area of the six-lane road when he was struck by the fire truck, which had both its lights and siren activated, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Whitehurst was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries, where he later died.

The investigation details the driver of the fire truck, whose identity will not be released, tried to evade Whitehurst, but was unable to avoid hitting him. The driver has been cleared of any wrongdoing and will not be charged.

An autopsy was completed on Whitehurst, and the Sheriff’s Office is awaiting his toxicology report. The reason for his attempt to cross Warrenton Road is still unknown.
