Transformer fire causes Fairfax County power outages

WASHINGTON – Many Dominion Virginia Power customers are still in the dark after a transformer fire in Reston, Va., Tuesday morning.

A large power transformer caught fire in the Sunset Hills area of Reston at about 8 a.m. The fire caused about 700 Dominion Virginia Power customers to lose power. Of those 700 customers, more than 250 are expected to be without power until late Tuesday evening, according to a Dominion Virginia Power spokesperson.

Most of the customers in the dark are in an apartment condo at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Sunset Hills Road across from the Reston Town Center.

The fire involved a major transformer that works with another adjacent transformer, the spokesperson says.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze Tuesday morning and are working to determine what caused the fire.
